FAQs

Why are my sweet potato fries not crispy in air fryer? ›

Tips for Crispy Sweet Potato Fries in Air Fryer

Cooking food in a single layer is really important — the hot air needs to circulate all the way around! Additionally, don't forget to turn the fries halfway through and do your best to slice each fry evenly.

Why do my sweet potato fries turn out soggy in air fryer? ›

If your air fryer fries are soggy, it is likely because you over-crowded them in the basket. The sweet potatoes steam when crowded together, instead of air frying. For the best, most crispy results, cook the fries in a single layer so that the air has room to circulate.

Why soak potatoes before air frying? ›

While it may seem like a pain, soaking the potatoes in hot water for 10 minutes prior to cooking them in the air fryer is essential. The water removes excess starch, allowing the fries to be their crispiest. Instead of soaking them in large bowl of cold water, I like to use hot water to cook the potatoes slightly.

Why aren t fries crispy in air fryer? ›

It's essential that you spread the potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket and that you leave a little space between each one. If they're too crowded, the potatoes will steam inside the air fryer, and they won't get crispy. In order to give them adequate space, you'll likely need to work in batches.

Why do you soak sweet potatoes before baking? ›

The cold water bath helps rinse the starch off the sweet potatoes so they're a bit more crispy. That said, if you do not have the time, you can still get crispy baked sweet potato fries by using high heat and a little drizzle of olive oil.

How do you crisp fries in an air fryer? ›

Simply set your air fryer to 350 degrees, then place your leftover fries in a single layer in the fryer basket. Heat them for three to five minutes or until they reach your desired crispiness.

Should I soak my sweet potatoes before air frying? ›

Before the air fryer became popular I was all about baked sweet potato fries. I still love them, but I have to admit that using the air fryer to make them is faster and they actually get crispier too. Spoiler alert: there's no need to soak your potatoes in water ahead of time!

Can you put foil in an air fryer? ›

The great news about air fryers is that you can use foil along with parchment paper to cook your food in an air fryer. Just remember that if it's safe and effective to use in a conventional oven, it will work just fine in an air fryer.

Can you eat sweet potato skin? ›

You can eat sweet potato skin. It's a good source of fiber, a nutrient that may help lower the risk of heart disease and keep you feeling full for longer periods of time. The next time you make a sweet potato dish, whether it's a roasted side dish or a hearty, cozy casserole, leave the peel on.

Do I add oil to fries in air fryer? ›

Put the potatoes into a dry bowl and add oil, salt, and any other seasonings you like. Stir well until they are coated. Air fry in batches. Preheat the air fryer and “fry” those fries until they are golden brown.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes for fries? ›

A: The main reasons to cut the potatoes and pre-soak in water are: To allow the excess starches and sugars to be removed from the outer surface of the fry strips AND to keep the potatoes from browning prematurely from exposure to air. Covering in water helps the potato from turning a dark color.

Do you season fries before or after air frying? ›

Rinse the fries in cold water and thoroughly pat dry. Add the fries into a large bowl and drizzle with the oil and toss. Sprinkle seasonings over the fries and toss again. Transfer the fries into the air fryer basket* and cook at 380 for 10 minutes.

Do you preheat air fryer for fries? ›

The first step to cooking frozen French fries in an air fryer is to preheat your appliance. This will ensure that your fries cook evenly and become crispy on the outside while remaining soft on the inside. Set your air fryer to 200°C (400°F) and let it preheat for 3-5 minutes.

How much heat and time should you put a sweet potato in an air fryer? ›

Sweet potatoes take 40 to 50 minutes to bake in the air fryer at 370 degrees F, compared to 50 to 65 minutes (or longer) in the oven (check out How to Bake a Sweet Potato). Use that time to whip up a fast, easy main like Pan Fried Chicken Breast.

Why are my air fried potatoes dry? ›

In theory, you can cook in the air fryer without using oil, but the resulting food could potentially be dry in texture. I like to use about a tablespoon of oil when cooking in the air fryer, so that these potatoes get nice and golden, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture.
